Community- and School-Based Prevention Programs

Program Description
There are three major components of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse's prevention system: Missouri Substance Abuse Prevention Resources Network, school-based initiative (Missouri SPIRIT), and community-based services for youth and others. These components combine to create a continuum of prevention services available to all populations and all regions of the state. At Family Counseling Center, Inc. we offer the Missouri Spirit Program and the Missouri Substance Abuse Prevention Network, also known as the “Support Center”.

Missouri Substance Abuse Prevention Resources Network
The Prevention Resources Network is comprised of local Community 2000 teams and coalitions, regional training and technical assistance centers (Regional Support Centers), and the statewide training and resource development center. The Prevention Resources Network supports community initiatives to reduce underage tobacco and alcohol use, youth accessibility to alcohol and tobacco, and the incidence and prevalence of substance use and abuse through changing community norms toward substance use by youth and others.

Missouri SPIRIT (School-based Initiative)
The goal of Missouri SPIRIT is to support the development and implementation of a continuum of substance abuse prevention services in all public school grades kindergarten through 12. A pilot test of the Initiative's concepts, models, and implement is taking place in five school districts: Hickman Mills, Knox County, Jennings, New Madrid County, and Cartharge. Family Counseling Center, Inc. works within the New Madrid County Schools in the Missouri SPIRIT program. The program is now in it’s 5th year.
